One Child Policy
One child policy is a factor that needs close monitoring since it denies many people an opportunity to have more children. The policy advocates for individuals to have only one child. On a deeper examination of the policy one comes to conclude that it denies many women and families the right to possess many offspring. One child policy need to be abandoned at all cost as it goes against the will of many people. Having one kid sounds a tormenting ground for many persons. A child with neither sister nor brother feels lonely especially during the times he is in the house alone. Parents also feel much disturbed since all their hopes hang on one child. Logically reasoning, restricting the number of family newborns to one has more effects on individuals than controlling population. One child policy calls for timely abandonment if people are to remain psychologically upright.
The intension of introducing one child policy in 1979 in China was meant to restrict the number of births by a couple one (Fong, Vanessa L, 89). The reason behind this policy curbing the high population that China experienced by then. Ideally it seemed potentially good since reduced population gave the government the ability to offer quality services to the people. The services included things like education, and other possible benefits. However it is worth noticing that not all people benefited from the policy since it was applied selectively. It came out those families that had more than one child by then never benefited from the one child policy. The concern in this policy is on whether it considers individuals need for children. In a deeper sense, it calls for better ways of controlling population rather than restricting the number of children that one can give birth to.
One disadvantage of one child policy is how death affects it. A parent with one child may find it painful when she loses the child at a point in life. Mortality is unavoidable calamity that most people do not accept as a reality. One is likely to reason on the grounds of strong health facilities available to support healthiness. However, it remains a reality that even with such technologies death still takes place. In the event that death occurs then, the family remains with no child to have hopes on. This touches particularly on the couples who cannot give birth at that stage.
More so, one child policy is likely to lead to ageing population in the country. Ageing population refers to the situation where a country has more people aged 65 years and above compared to those with sixty five years below. The existent of such age gap can possible lead to adequate manpower at a given stage (Von, Der P. J. C, 63). Old people cannot offer effective labour and as a result of this the economy can register negative growth. With young people in the country, the country’s future is assured. Young people tend to be actively involved in various sectors in the economy compared to old people whose age may not allow this. In assessing the impact of one child policy on an economy, it comes out clear that a population devoid of young population remains with a series of labour problems. By having many old people in the society, a number of activities may not function effectively. The government stands a better chance of using other methods in curbing population rates. It does not necessarily involve only giving birth to one child as a population control means. An alternative to the idea can be generated so as to help in balancing the country’s population.
In addition, the policy has interfered with some of the traditional beliefs. In most cases people prefer boys to ladies. As a result of this, the lives of many females have been in danger. Some have been abandoned and have gone to stay in orphanages, others left homeless and some killed. The question is why should we enact a policy that leads to the loss of lives both directly and indirectly? Some kids have been abandoned by their parents based on the fact that they want to give birth to boys (Von, Der P. J. C, 50). Since a child never planned for her birth then it bits logic making her to suffer. It would mean that in as much as the government thinks that it supports its population, some are actually in grief. The problem does not only begin with children but starts from the families. Couples remain under pressure especially when they cannot give birth to a boy. The problem may lead to unpeaceful marriages and some end up divorcing or separating. It does not sound appropriate is a policy can because more harm the benefits. In other circumstances, female babies have been killed based on traditional beliefs. Since government only allows and recognizes one child from a family, other people find it unique when they give birth to girls. The only option available is to kill the child and have another birth. Innocent children are made to suffer for no apparent reason. Another negative impact of the policy is that it has led to more males than females in China. The population currently indicates that the number of male to that of female is not equal. Masculine gender exceeds the feminine gender by some percentage. Government needs to look for ways of curbing the effect of one child policy or to fully abandon it. It is only through such options that children will not suffer from severe attacks. It a strong belief that when better means of population control can be implement then such sufferings can be alleviated. The government needs to go for alternatives to one child policy rather than using in curbing population growth.
It is true that restricting the number of children to one of couples proves no good move. However, one needs to appreciate that in terms of population control, it has confirmed a positive factor. Since 1979, China population has fallen by 0.7 per cent (Fong, Vanessa L, 187). The falling in population proves that one child policy is an effective way of controlling population growth. Furthermore, it provides good grounds for the use of economic resources. A large population normally strains on the utilizing the available economic resources. This normally leads to poor living standards which in effect results to bad health conditions. When there is optimal population in a country then even government can avail quality services to its people. With large population, a country’s leadership may not have opportunity of appropriately providing full support to its citizens. It, therefore, sounds prudent for a country to apply necessary measure in regulating the population growth.
In conclusion, it is necessary to remain firm and reinstate that one child policy deserves no support in a country. Its impacts have remained disastrous for most countries especially China. Most children have been made to suffer with others moving to orphanages because they are abandoned by their family members. The most devastating point is when parents kill children because they need male gender. Since negative impacts of the policy exceed its positive ones, a country needs to abandon its use. Based on the mentioned disadvantages of one child policy it china and other countries need to abandon it.
